Portugal 5 Places to Visit You Have Never Heard
St. John the Baptist Fort
São João Baptista Fort, or Fortress, is located on the beautiful island of Berlenga. The small Berlengas Archipelago, located about 10km west of Peniche, is made up of the island of Berlenga Grande and adjacent reefs, the Stelae and the Farcados-Farbons, and has been classified as a Nature Reserve since 1981.
The Fort of St. John the Baptist was built in 1651 by King D. João IV, given its strategic position. It is said, however, that on the island there would have been a monastery of the Order of St. Jerome since 1513, which provided assistance to the passing sailors and the many castaways who were victims of coastal violence. This monastery was successively attacked by pirates, which led to its abandonment. Already in the nineteenth century the fort is dismantled and abandoned, serving as support for fishing activities in the region. In the twentieth century, the fort was transformed into an inn, abandoned after the April 25 revolution.
Algar de Benagil
It is a rocky cavity that nature, through two of its most talented children - wind and water - has been drawing. The formations of Benagil, by their karst composition, are more permeable to the force of the sea, which is why we find so many caves here - a truth applicable to any limestone terrain, just remember the numerous caves of the Serra de Aire and Candeeiros massif, Extremadura
It is one of many caves near Benagil, but has become the most famous, especially in foreign eyes. And this happens for two reasons: its easy access, at least comparing it to others, with two large inlets excavated a short distance from a well-known beach; and its sunny beauty, aided by a circular crack in the ceiling, through which the suns rays pass, making it an excellent bathing place.
Crows Cauldron
The Cauldron is the main landscape element of the island and resulted from the collapse of the top of Corvos central volcano. This volcanic boiler has an elliptical shape with a maximum diameter of 2.3 kilometers and a depth of 305 meters.
Its interior is occupied by a shallow lagoon and several small volcanic cones that cut the body of water and that many say outline the design of the Azorean islands. From the Caldeirão viewpoint you can observe this vast volcanic depression and enjoy the quiet calm that characterizes this remote point of Europe.
Village of Negrões
On the south bank of Albufeira do Alto Rabagão is Vilarinho de Negrões, one of the most picturesque villages in the whole region, for its still relatively preserved houses and, above all, for its location on a narrow and beautiful peninsula - a small piece of land saved from rising waters.
Vilarinho de Negrões is thus a land that is seen daily in the mirror and distinguished at a distance by its perfect symmetry, a kind of Portuguese Garden of Eden. Nearby is the parish of Negrões, soul mate, which has an all granite oven.
Casmilo Buracas
The Buracas do Casmilo is an interesting geological formation that can be visited in the municipality of Condeixa-a-Nova, parish of Zambujal, in Portugal. On the road that connects the Lady of the Circle hill to the Serra de Janeanes we find the village of Casmilo.
